Four senior police commanders have been appointed to lead security operations for the upcoming local council elections scheduled for 4 April.
The appointments were formally confirmed at a meeting held at Police Headquarters, where Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen presented the officers with their certificates. Discussions at the meeting focused on election‑day security, operational coordination, and ensuring a safe environment for voters.
The Maldives Police Service announced the appointed officers as follows: Assistant Commissioner as Overall Commander, Chief Superintendent Hussain Sameer as Deputy Commander, Chief Superintendent Ahmed Athif as Chief Technology Officer, and Superintendent Abdul Matheen Abdul Kareem as Tactical Commander.
Police noted that operation commanders are appointed for every major election to oversee security planning and deployment across the country.
Political parties have already begun preparations for the polls. The ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) held its primaries on 27 December, while the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is scheduled to hold its primaries on 16 January.
Meanwhile, the Elections Commission launched a training programme last weekend for trainers who will prepare election officials ahead of the vote.
