MIFCO Cold Storage Expansion Expected to Be Operational by Mid-Year
New cold storage facility at MIFCO’s Felivaru hub set to open by mid-year
Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited (MIFCO) is set to complete and make operational a new cold storage facility at its main production hub in Felivaru, Lhaviyani Atoll, by mid-year.
The project is part of the Felivaru Expansion Project, which has been awarded to an Indian company. The expansion is expected to allow fishermen in the northern atolls to sell their catch directly to Felivaru, reducing the need for long trips to Kooddoo and significantly lowering fuel costs.
As part of the project, a new cannery is being constructed to replace the existing facility, which currently has a capacity of 40–50 tonnes. The expansion will also increase cold storage capacity by approximately 4,500 tonnes.
MIFCO has confirmed that the upgraded cold storage will include a 200-tonne brine freezing system and an 80-tonne RSW system, enabling Felivaru to process an additional 280 tonnes of fish per day.
