STELCO Leadership Temporarily Handed to Dr. Azwar, Procurement Head Azhad Removed From Post
Dr. Ali Azwar (L), Azhad Rameez (R).
State Electric Company (STELCO) leadership has been temporarily handed to Deputy Managing Director Dr. Ali Azwar following the dismissal of Managing Director Ahmed Shamah Rasheed yesterday, while the company has also removed its head of procurement, Azhad Rameez, from his post.
Shamah was appointed Managing Director on 7 September last year, following the dismissal of his predecessor, Hussain Fahmy. His removal comes around four months after taking up the post. STELCO has not disclosed the reasons for his dismissal.
Dr. Azwar assumed temporary charge of the state-owned utility yesterday afternoon. Shortly afterwards, STELCO relieved Azhad, who served as Head of the Procurement Department and General Manager, of his responsibilities, a media official from the company confirmed.
The internal reshuffle follows the circulation of an audio recording allegedly featuring Shamah discussing illicit financial gains through STELCO, in which Azhad’s name was also mentioned. The authenticity of the recording has not been officially confirmed. In interviews he gave to local media, Shamah denied that the recordings were authentic.
