Maldives Immigration has reminded foreigners working in the country to ensure they hold a valid e‑visa when travelling abroad and returning. The e‑visa must be unexpired to allow entry or exit on a work visa.
The Maldives launched its e‑visa service on 23 November last year, becoming the first country in the region to offer this fully digital system. All visa-related services are now processed online, changing the way visas are issued to foreign nationals.
Foreigners holding a work permit can only enter or leave the country on a work visa if their e‑visa remains valid. Newly arriving foreign workers are also required to obtain an unexpired entry pass from the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology before entering the Maldives.
Employers registered in the Expat Online system are responsible for confirming the validity of previously issued work visas for their employees, as the e‑visa validity corresponds with that of the work permit.
Foreigners may exit the Maldives without completing the work visa process only once, and only within 15 days of arrival, provided their work permit is still valid.
