The remand of two youths arrested with more than three kilograms of drugs has been extended by 30 days.
Shaain Ali, 27, of Falak, L. Naifaru, and Aishath Maasha Ahmed, 20, of Ihraamge, AA. Feridhoo, were taken into custody during a court-ordered search of a residence in Henveiru district, Male’. The operation was conducted by the Maldives Police Service’s Drug Enforcement Department and Counter Narcotics Intelligence.
The suspects were initially remanded for five days. They were presented before the Criminal Court on Saturday, which approved a 30-day extension of their remand.
The remand order states that the apartment from which the drugs were seized was rented under Maasha’s name. It notes that the drugs were kept in plain view alongside drug paraphernalia, including packaging equipment. Shaain is reported to have a prior criminal record.
The Maldives Police Service has indicated that youths are increasingly involved in drug-related offences and are often active in operating major drug networks.
