Over 8,000 Students Enrolled in Government Free Degree Programme

Over 8,000 students are currently enrolled in the government’s free degree programme, according to the Higher Education Ministry.

The ministry released statistics showing that 8,680 students are pursuing degrees under the scheme. Over the past two years, 6,640 students have graduated, including 4,370 females and 2,270 males.

As of last year, 5,863 students were registered under the programme, comprising 3,765 females and 2,098 males.

A total of MVR 301.66 million has been disbursed to students under the free degree programme, up from MVR 151.30 million disbursed last year alone.

In addition, 602 students are pursuing higher education in the Maldives and in 20 countries abroad through scholarships. Scholarship funding totalling MVR 471.08 million has been disbursed so far, with MVR 222.17 million allocated last year.
