Visually impaired voters in the Maldives can now register to mark their ballot papers independently in the upcoming local council elections.
The Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) has opened registration until 22:00 on February 23. Voters can register by calling 1414, with the service available daily from 09:00 to 22:00, except Sundays when it operates from 15:00 to 22:00.
Independent voting for visually impaired persons was introduced through a parliamentary amendment on May 29, 2023, allowing the use of a tactile ballot template. The template was first employed in the 2023 presidential election, during which 45 voters used the device, according to EC figures.
The plastic template is made of firm material and features raised markers next to each candidate’s name and number. It allows the ballot paper to be inserted into or aligned beneath the template, enabling voters to mark their choice without assistance.
The next local council elections are scheduled for April 4.
