The State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has begun preparatory work to strengthen electricity generation capacity across the Maldives ahead of the annual peak season for power consumption.

The initiative includes the delivery and installation of 12 generator sets to islands nationwide, aimed at ensuring a stable, reliable, and uninterrupted electricity supply during periods of increased demand.

STELCO carries out targeted readiness programmes each year in anticipation of higher electricity usage. This year, the work has commenced ahead of the holy month of Ramadan, when household power consumption typically rises. The company has confirmed that preparations for the upcoming peak season are already underway.

According to STELCO, generator sets with capacities of 600 kilowatts and 1,000 kilowatts have been procured for delivery to the islands. Each of the 12 identified islands is set to receive one generator, with the objective of enhancing island-level generation capacity and improving overall system resilience.

The company has stated that the installation and commissioning of all units will be completed before the start of Ramadan, reinforcing its commitment to providing electricity services in a sustainable and uninterrupted manner. The initiative is also intended to strengthen public confidence in the reliability of the national power supply.

In a related development, STELCO has commissioned and brought into operation a 1,200-kilowatt generator set in Vilimalé’, further increasing generation capacity in the Greater Malé’ region. The additional capacity is expected to enhance supply stability and provide greater assurance to households regarding service quality and continuity.
