A record 31 Huffaz are set to graduate in the Maldives this year, marking the highest number ever in a single year, according to the Islamic Ministry.

Citing the Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, the ministry wrote that the preparations for the Hafiz Graduation Ceremony scheduled to take place during Ramadan have now been finalised.

He stated that Hifz examinations in the Maldives are conducted under strict standards of integrity and supervised by experienced Hafizes. Under the current examination process, students must recite at least one Juz (one of thirty roughly equal parts into which the Quran is divided) from memory each day until they complete the entire Qur’an. Some candidates are able to recite up to two Juz per day, he added.

The ministry attributed Dr Shaheem as saying that examination committees are currently operating at the National Centre for the Holy Qur’an and the Islamic University in Malé, as well as in Fuvahmulah City and Addu City. He confirmed that authorities are working to establish a new Hifz examination committee in Lhaviyani Atoll this year.

The decision to form a committee in Lhaviyani Atoll follows recognition of the Atoll’s capital island, Naifaru’s, significant contribution to Qur’anic memorisation, as the island produces the highest number of Hafizes outside Malé, Addu and Fuvahmulah, according to the Minister.
