Electricity meters will be read by STELCO as Ramadan bill capping approaches

The State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) will take electricity meter readings this week in preparation for the implementation of the government’s decision to cap domestic electricity bills during Ramadan.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced three months ago that electricity bills charged at the domestic rate during the fasting month will not exceed MVR 400. Any amount above this threshold will be discounted. The announcement was first made at a Progressive National Congress (PNC) rally held last November to mark the government’s second anniversary.

STELCO stated that meter readings will be conducted on Monday and Tuesday in order to issue a separate bill for Ramadan, which is scheduled to begin next Wednesday. The company has requested the cooperation of customers to facilitate the process.

The government introduced similar concessions last Ramadan, when discounts were also applied to electricity bills. President Muizzu has pledged to continue providing reductions on both electricity and water bills during the fasting month. Last year, the total value of the discounts amounted to approximately MVR 140 million.
