President Mohamed Muizzu has emphasised the need to strengthen cooperation within the Commonwealth of Nations on climate resilience, concessional financing and sustainable debt solutions.

In a message marking Commonwealth Day yesterday, the president said the Commonwealth has long demonstrated the power of unity in safeguarding peace, promoting good governance, advancing sustainable development and strengthening international cooperation.

Referring to this year’s theme, “Unlocking Opportunities Together for a Prosperous Commonwealth”, Muizzu highlighted the importance of collective commitment in addressing global challenges. He said the theme reflects the spirit of unity and partnership needed to build a Commonwealth that is “fit for purpose”.

The president noted that the theme aligns closely with the Maldives’ national priorities, including climate resilience, education mobility, sustainable tourism and digitalisation, as well as ensuring that these opportunities benefit communities across the country.

Muizzu added that the Maldives, as a Small Island Developing State, remains particularly vulnerable to the growing impacts of climate change and external economic shocks.

Marking the 77th anniversary of the Commonwealth, the president reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to strengthening cooperation within the organisation so that every member country, regardless of size, can thrive.

He also noted that the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting would provide an opportunity for member states to renew shared commitments.

Muizzu said the Maldives looks forward to engaging actively with Commonwealth partners to deliver meaningful outcomes for the organisation and its member states.
