State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has initiated a project to modernise the electricity network in Dhigurah, Alif Dhaalu Atoll, in an effort to ensure an uninterrupted power supply on the island.
STELCO stated that the installation of the new electricity network is progressing at a rapid pace as part of distribution network upgrade works aimed at expanding and strengthening the island’s electricity system. The project is being carried out in line with ongoing infrastructural development on the island.
As part of the first phase of the initiative, work is underway to establish a substation and develop an upstream capacity of 1,500kV.
The company aims to complete the first phase of the project by the end of next week. STELCO also stated that the upgrades are expected to provide the local community with a more sustainable and reliable electricity supply.
Dhigurah has a resident population of around 600 people and is widely known for its natural beauty and local tourism sector.
The island currently hosts 14 guesthouses. Improved and reliable electricity supply is expected to support daily life for residents while also strengthening economic activities linked to tourism on the island.
