Gov’t Introduces Green Licence Plates for Electric Vehicles
Eco friendly vehicles to get new green licence plates
The government has announced the introduction of green licence plates for environmentally friendly vehicles as part of efforts to promote sustainable transportation in the Maldives.
Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen confirmed the initiative, describing it as the first of its kind in the country. The new green plates will make electric and eco-friendly vehicles more easily identifiable on the roads.
Under the new system, green plates will feature white lettering for privately owned electric vehicles and yellow lettering for electric taxis. Minister Ameen shared a preview of the new electric vehicle plates on social media and invited public support for the transition towards cleaner transportation.
The initiative aligns with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s environmental commitments, including pledges made ahead of COP29, and reflects the government’s broader plan to establish a greener transport system in the Maldives.
Currently, licence plates in the Maldives follow a colour-coded system, with black plates used for private vehicles, yellow for taxis, white for military vehicles and blue for diplomatic vehicles.
The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation is also preparing to launch a fully electric taxi service, with 150 electric vehicles expected to be imported as part of the initiative.
