The foundation stone has been laid for a new mosque to be constructed on the site where the former Zikra Mosque once stood in the Malé area.

The ceremony took place last evening, with the foundation stone laid by the Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed.

According to the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, the mosque will be developed with private funding and will have the capacity to accommodate around 1,500 worshippers. The design of the new building will also include an elevator to improve accessibility.

Practical construction work on the mosque is scheduled to begin after the month of Ramadan.

The ministry stated that the project forms part of a broader plan to replace older mosques with more modern facilities, noting that the new mosque will be built on the same land where the Zikra Mosque previously stood.
