An agreement has been signed to establish a yellowfin tuna processing and export facility in Addu City as part of efforts to strengthen the Maldives’ fisheries sector.
The facility will be developed under an agreement between China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) and the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO), aimed at upgrading the company’s infrastructure and expanding its operational capacity.
MIFCO signed three agreements with CMEC, including one focused on increasing fish purchase and storage capacity at the Addu Fisheries Complex alongside the development of the frozen yellowfin tuna processing and export facility.
Additional agreements cover the establishment of a cold storage and blast freezing centre in Thaa Atoll Hirilandhoo, as well as upgrades to fish purchase and cold storage infrastructure in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll Thinadhoo.
MIFCO stated that the agreements are intended to enhance its cold storage, processing and export capabilities, while supporting the broader development of the fisheries industry.
The projects are also expected to contribute to sustainable development efforts and facilitate an increase in the export of value-added fish products from the Maldives.
