Maldives Police Service has reported a significant increase in cases of extortion involving private photos and videos.

According to a statement posted on the police website, incidents where individuals are threatened with the exposure of private images for financial gain, as well as the illegal sale and circulation of such images online without consent, are among the most commonly reported offences.

Most cases involve images initially shared within trusted relationships. Police explained that these images are often misused after relationships end to intimidate, damage reputations, or seek personal gain.

Authorities emphasised that these acts are serious offences, noting that victims suffer psychological and social harm as well as a loss of dignity. In Maldivian society, which places high value on family and respect, the consequences of such crimes are particularly severe.

Police advised the public to avoid creating, sharing, or storing private images on digital platforms, as once shared, content is outside the control of the owner and vulnerable to misuse.

The police urged individuals to refrain from sharing or enabling the circulation of such material, warning that involvement in these acts may constitute an offence. Citizens are encouraged to report cases of blackmail or similar crimes promptly.

Authorities confirmed that strict legal action will be taken against perpetrators of extortion and related offences involving private images.
