The Housing Ministry has announced the completion of dredging work required for the airport project in Sh. Milandhoo.

President Mohamed Muizzu visited Milandhoo on October 15 last year to inaugurate the project. During the visit, he pledged to complete the land dredging work within eight months and to complete the airport within two and a half years.

Deputy Housing Minister Mohamed Nashid stated in a post on X on Monday that 25.90 hectares of land required for the airport had now been dredged. The dredging work was contracted by Maldives Airports Company Limited to Boskalis.

Nashid stated that the work was completed ahead of schedule and fulfilled the President’s pledge. He added that the completion reflected the government’s commitment to delivering its promises to the public at a fast pace.

The President has previously stated that an airport is essential for Milandhoo and noted that the island’s harbour would need to be relocated to facilitate the construction of the airport.

The government has also pledged to ensure that every inhabited island in the Maldives is located within 30 minutes of an airport.
