The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure has reported a strong public response to the government’s housing initiatives, with more than 9,600 applications formally submitted to date.
According to the ministry, a total of 9,645 applicants have completed their submissions. The data indicates a clear preference for urban apartment living, with 5,993 individuals applying for flats, while 3,234 applicants have requested residential land plots.
The family housing programme has driven the majority of applications, accounting for 9,227 submissions. A further 418 applications have been made under the “Goathi Gedhoru” scheme, which allows individuals to apply even if a spouse already owns adequate housing. In addition to completed submissions, there remains significant pending interest, with 13,279 applications currently in draft form.
The government is set to expand its social housing initiatives from 1 April under the “Gedhoruveriyaa” programme, which operates within the broader Boahiyaavahikan Emmenah framework. The expansion will introduce two new categories, including a dedicated scheme for individuals with disabilities.
The revised framework also aims to address issues arising from previous land allocation programmes. It provides an option for families who were previously awarded joint land allocations to transition to individual plots. In addition, individuals who were earlier deemed ineligible for the “Binveriyaa” land scheme due to ownership of government-built social housing flats will now be accommodated under the updated rules.
