Member for Dhiggaru constituency and Deputy Speaker of the People’s Parliament, Ahmed Nazim, has been removed from two of the parliament’s most influential committees.
Nazim presided over today’s parliamentary sitting in the absence of Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla, who had been on an official trip abroad and returned to the Maldives today. No announcement regarding his removal was made during the sitting.
However, updates on the official parliament website show that Nazim has been removed from both the Public Accounts Committee and the Committee on National Security Services, commonly referred to as the 241 Committee.
Member for North Fuvahmulah constituency Hamad Abdulla has been appointed to the 241 Committee in his place, while Member for Machangolhi Central constituency Ahmed Xamyr has been appointed to the Public Accounts Committee.
The parliament website indicates that Nazim remains a member of the State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) Committee.
Nazim has previously played a prominent role in committee work, particularly within the Public Accounts Committee. He was involved in investigations into alleged corruption cases, including matters related to the police welfare company, POLCO, and led inquiries concerning several state-owned enterprises.
Changes to parliamentary committees are occasionally made at the request of political parties and can reflect internal party decisions.
