MP for South Galolhu Meekail Ahmed Naseem, a candidate in the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) chairperson election, has called for the temporary removal of Deputy Chairperson (Admin) Ibrahim Waheed, citing his active support and campaigning for another candidate in the race.

In a letter addressed to MDP interim Chairperson Abdul Gafoor Moosa, Meekail alleged that Ibrahim Waheed has been actively campaigning for another candidate contesting the chairperson election scheduled for 12 June.

He said complaints had been raised by party members regarding Ibrahim’s involvement, adding that social media posts also indicate his support for former President Mohamed Nasheed’s campaign.

Meekail stated that the deputy chairperson (admin) is responsible for overseeing party membership and campaign-related activities, and therefore must remain neutral and uphold integrity during internal party elections.

He warned that open support for a specific candidate could create an unfair advantage and undermine confidence in the fairness of the election process. As a senior figure within the party, he said such involvement risks raising concerns among members.

Meekail said Ibrahim’s actions have already led to unease within the party, particularly given his role in matters related to internal elections.

He has requested that Ibrahim be temporarily relieved of his responsibilities for the duration of the campaign period.

“I have applied for the position of MDP Chairperson to restore the trust of the general members that has been lost in this party. To ensure such things do not happen again. My hope is that you will look into this matter, prioritise the responsibilities of all party members, and take swift action on this issue,” Meekail said.
