Authorities have decided to introduce a specialised luggage tagging system linked directly to pilgrims’ passports to improve the safety and handling of belongings for Maldivians travelling to Saudi Arabia for this year’s Hajj pilgrimage.

According to the Maldives Hajj Mission, the initiative is aimed at strengthening and streamlining travel logistics for pilgrims during the Hajj season.

As part of preparations for the pilgrimage, the Maldives Hajj Mission held discussions with Saudi Post’s ‘Subul’, the service provider responsible for managing luggage transportation for Maldivian pilgrims.

Senior officials from the Maldives Hajj Mission, Maldives Hajj Corporation Limited and the service provider took part in the meeting.

Under the new arrangement, Subul will oversee the transportation of pilgrims’ luggage from airports in Saudi Arabia directly to their designated hotels. Authorities said integrating passport information into luggage tags would allow each item to be accurately identified and delivered to its owner without confusion.

The system will enable luggage to be scanned using passport-linked data, instantly displaying the pilgrim’s identity, hotel and room number. The initiative is also in line with wider efforts by Saudi authorities to digitalise Hajj management and logistics.

The Maldives Hajj Mission said the main objective of the system is to ensure pilgrims’ luggage reaches their hotels by the time they arrive from the airport. In previous years, pilgrims and staff from the Hajj Corporation spent significant time collecting and transporting luggage to accommodation.

This year, the Maldives has been allocated a quota of 1,000 pilgrims for Hajj. All arrangements are being managed by the state-owned Maldives Hajj Corporation, with pilgrims scheduled to begin travelling to Saudi Arabia later this month.

The Maldives Hajj Mission said it would continue working with relevant Saudi authorities to further improve the overall pilgrimage experience for Maldivian pilgrims.
