President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that World Thalassaemia Day serves as a reminder to uphold humanity and compassion by supporting every Maldivian child and family affected by the condition.
In a message shared on his official X account yesterday to mark World Thalassaemia Day, President Muizzu said building a resilient nation requires solidarity and community support.
“Thalassemia Day reminds us and teaches us to prioritize the qualities of humanity and compassion. To provide community assistance and support to every Maldivian child and family, and to build a resilient nation,” the President said.
He added that every Maldivian living with thalassaemia should be regarded as part of the national family.
“It is the government’s responsibility and duty to facilitate the health and social protection, as well as the opportunities, that those families require,” he said.
First Lady Sajidha Mohamed also shared a message on the occasion, offering prayers for thalassaemia patients.
In her message, she described kindness and caring words as “half of the treatment” and prayed for the speedy recovery of children receiving treatment for thalassaemia with the support, love and compassion of the community.
World Thalassaemia Day is observed annually on 8 May. The Government has identified creating a supportive environment for thalassaemia patients and their families as a priority.
