The Ministry of Defence and the Australian Border Force Command have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening civilian maritime safety and security cooperation between the Maldives and Australia.
According to the Defence Ministry, the agreement will facilitate joint exercises and coordinated maritime operations between the two countries.
The MoU also establishes a framework for cooperation in information-sharing and the exchange of technical expertise.
Authorities said the main objective of the agreement is to improve operational coordination and support faster and more effective responses to regional maritime security challenges.
The Defence Ministry stated that the administration of President Mohamed Muizzu places significant priority on ensuring the security and safety of the Maldives.
The agreement follows another defence cooperation initiative signed with Australia late last month, under which Australia donated a new Guardian-class patrol boat to the Maldives through its Defence Cooperation Program.
Authorities said the vessel is expected to strengthen the Maldives’ capacity to manage its Exclusive Economic Zone, combat illegal activities and support disaster response operations.
The donation has also been described as a reflection of the longstanding defence partnership and mutual trust between the Maldives and Australia.
