A total of 37 tonnes of sea-to-air cargo were transported abroad from the Maldives in April, according to official data. The volume is equivalent to eight Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) in container capacity terms.
The sea-to-air cargo service, which was inaugurated on 15 May 2024, enables seaborne cargo arriving in the Maldives to be shipped onwards to international destinations through air transit.
According to Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), cargo was shipped to five countries during April using four airlines: Emirates, Etihad Airways, Lufthansa and Qatar Airways.
The service is currently operated in partnership between Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) and MPL, and has now been expanded to include 17 airlines.
Sea-to-air cargo transportation is widely used in several countries as a logistics solution that combines maritime and air freight services. Authorities have stated that the Maldives has strong potential to further expand the sector due to the large number of international airlines operating to the country.
