Cases of dengue fever and flu increased across the Maldives last month, with more than 24,800 cases reported nationwide as heavy rains continued during a period typically associated with a rise in tropical diseases.
According to the Health Protection Agency (HPA), more than 20,000 people reported flu symptoms in March. The agency also recorded 24,221 measles cases during the month.
Dengue cases also saw an increase, rising from 601 cases in March to 643 cases by the end of last month. The highest number of dengue infections was reported in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, which alone accounted for 80 cases.
While dengue and flu cases increased, HPA statistics showed a decline in diarrhea cases last month, with 3,993 cases reported nationwide.
The HPA has urged the public to take necessary precautions to help prevent the spread of dengue and other communicable diseases.
Meanwhile, health officials in Faresmathoda said viral fever has spread rapidly on the island, with nearly half of the population seeking medical treatment in recent weeks.
