The ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) has secured enough signatures to submit a motion seeking the removal of Deputy Speaker of Parliament Ahmed Nazim, according to senior party sources.
Sources within the party said Dhiggaru MP Nazim had been asked to resign from his position as the Deputy Speaker of Parliament but declined to do so, prompting the ruling party to proceed with a formal removal motion.
PNC officials confirmed that the required signatures for the motion have already been obtained.
The latest development comes amid a series of changes affecting Nazim’s role within the parliamentary group. He was recently removed from the party’s official WhatsApp group, which serves as the primary communication platform for PNC parliamentarians and is administered by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
Last month, Nazim was also removed from two of parliament’s most influential committees — the Security Services Committee, commonly known as the “241 Committee”, and the Public Finance Committee. He has since been reassigned to the Environment Committee.
Despite these developments, Nazim has continued to carry out his parliamentary responsibilities, frequently presiding over sittings in the absence of Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla.
Neither the President’s Office nor Nazim has publicly commented on the reasons behind the changes or the planned motion.
Nazim is regarded as one of the most experienced members of the current parliament. He previously served as Deputy Speaker from 2009 to 2015.
