Parliament has voted to extend the current session of the People’s Majlis until 31 May.
The motion was passed with 58 votes in favour and 11 against during today’s parliamentary sitting.
The proposal to extend the session was submitted by the Chair. Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla said the extension was necessary to complete important pending work before the session concludes.
Under parliamentary regulations, the Majlis operates through three sessions each year. The first session runs from 1 February to 15 May, meaning the current session was originally scheduled to conclude on Friday.
Parliamentary rules allow a session to be extended if important matters submitted to the Majlis remain unfinished. Any such extension must be approved through a vote of members.
According to the Standing Orders, the second session of the year runs from 1 June to 15 August, while the third session takes place from 1 October until the end of November.
A motion seeking the removal of Deputy Speaker of Parliament Ahmed Nazim was formally submitted to the Parliament Secretariat today, according to an announcement issued by Parliament.
In a statement shared on social media, Parliament said the resolution concerning the removal of Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Nazim had been received by the Secretariat and would proceed in accordance with the Constitution and parliamentary standing orders. Nazim has been given 14 days to respond to the motion.
The next parliament session will be held on Monday, May 18.
