Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla referred both nominations to the Foreign Relations Committee for review.

Adam Shareef and Tariq Ibrahim were among 10 ministers who resigned on 14 April at the request of the President, following setbacks for the government in the local council elections and a referendum on merging the country’s two main elections.

After leaving the cabinet, both men were appointed to the Foreign Ministry at ministerial level. The government later confirmed that they had been appointed as Ambassadors-at-Large within the ministry, although it did not disclose the dates of their appointments.

Former Attorney General Fathimath Dhiyana Saeed was also appointed as an Ambassador-at-Large.

At the time of the resignations, the President’s Office said the changes were intended to enable the administration to introduce “positive changes” and run the government in line with public expectations.

The reshuffle came after the government suffered losses in the local council elections held on 4 April and in the referendum concerning the proposed merger of the two major elections.
