Two bodies have been recovered in the ongoing search operation linked to the underwater cave diving incident in Vaavu Atoll, authorities have confirmed.

The recovery was made during a joint operation involving the Maldives National Defence Force Coast Guard, the Maldives Police Service, and specialist deep-diving experts deployed with support from the Italian government.

The divers were among a group of Italian nationals, which included researchers, who went missing last week during an underwater cave expedition. One diver had been previously found dead.

With the latest recovery, efforts continue to retrieve the remaining bodies from the cave site. Authorities have said further dives will be carried out in the coming days to complete the operation.

The incident has drawn widespread local and international attention, particularly after an MNDF diver involved in the rescue operation died from decompression illness sustained during the mission.

Earlier reports also confirmed that all four missing divers were eventually located inside the cave during the joint search effort, with recovery operations ongoing to bring them to the surface.
