MNDF Launches Nationwide Vessel Safety Checks Ahead of Eid Travel
The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has started a special operation to verify the safety of sea vessels across the Maldives ahead of travel for the Eid holidays.
Speaking on Public Service Media programme “Hendhunu Hendhunaa” yesterday, Coast Guard Squadron Commander Lieutenant Colonel Ahmed Faizan said the operation is being carried out nationwide, from Haa Alifu Atoll to Addu City.
Public offices across the Maldives are closed for the extended Eid holidays from Friday, 22 May, until 30 May, with schools and government offices scheduled to reopen on Sunday, 31 May.
The holiday period has resulted in increased travel to islands across the atolls, while the country is also experiencing rough weather conditions.
Vessel Safety Inspections
Lieutenant Colonel Faizan said the operation was launched due to the high volume of sea travel during the Eid period.
According to MNDF, inspections are focused on verifying whether vessels carry required life-saving equipment and whether safety equipment remains within valid expiry periods.
Faizan said MNDF has deployed a large number of vessels to different regions as part of the operation.
Public Urged to Prioritise Safety
MNDF also urged the public to prioritise safety during water sports and recreational sea activities conducted during the Eid holidays.
The authority advised families visiting beaches to closely monitor children, including while near the shoreline, and encouraged the use of life jackets during sea travel.
Cargo vessels were also advised to exercise caution, particularly during poor weather conditions. MNDF noted that reef-grounding incidents sometimes occur when vessel navigation is handed over to expatriate crew members at night.
The authority urged vessels to avoid night travel during rough weather unless absolutely necessary and to take additional safety precautions while travelling at sea.
Weather Conditions
According to the Maldives Meteorological Service, scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected across the northern and central atolls, while southern atolls are likely to experience occasional showers.
The sea is forecast to remain moderately rough, with winds between 8 and 18 mph and gusts reaching up to 35 mph during showers. Wave heights are expected to range between 3 and 6 feet.
Within the past 24 hours, Haa Dhaalu Atoll, Hanimaadhoo, recorded the highest rainfall at 33.2mm, followed by Raa Atoll, Alifushi, with 26.6mm and Noonu Atoll, Maafaru, with 22.7mm. B. Goidhoo recorded the lowest rainfall at 1.2mm.
