First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has called on eligible individuals to donate blood, saying it offers an opportunity to demonstrate generosity, serve humanity and earn goodwill regardless of wealth or financial means.
She made the remarks during the official reception held at the Islamic Centre yesterday evening to mark World Blood Donor Day.
In her address, the First Lady highlighted the importance of recognising the contributions of voluntary blood donors, describing them as individuals whose selfless actions help save lives and support those in need of medical care.
She said the annual observance serves not only to honour blood donors but also to encourage greater participation in voluntary blood donation, promote selflessness and sacrifice, and strengthen values such as kindness, compassion and mutual respect within society.
The First Lady also encouraged those who may feel hesitant about donating blood to overcome their concerns and experience the fulfilment that comes from helping others through a simple but meaningful act.
During the ceremony, commemorative shields and certificates were presented to long-serving blood donors and newly eligible 18-year-old first-time donors. Awards were also given to organisations that hosted the highest number of blood donation camps and to individuals who recorded the highest number of donations through such campaigns.
A Gold Award recognising individuals who have consistently donated blood over an extended period was presented during the event. The First Lady also handed over Lifetime Contribution Awards to donors who have made an exceptional and sustained contribution to voluntary blood donation over the years.
Health professionals and blood donors attended the ceremony.
Observed annually on 14 June, World Blood Donor Day recognises the voluntary contributions of blood donors and raises awareness of the importance of maintaining a safe and reliable blood supply for those requiring medical treatment and emergency care.
