The scholarships are being offered with support from the TransFORM Project, which is being implemented by the Government of the Maldives through the Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture, and Ocean Resources and financed by the World Bank.
According to the ministry, the scholarship programme aims to support higher education and capacity building in key sectors that contribute to the country’s economic and environmental development.
The Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture, and Ocean Resources stated that the Maldives–Transforming Fisheries Sector Management in the South-West Indian Ocean Region and Maldives Project seeks to strengthen regional, evidence-based fisheries management while improving competitiveness within the Maldivian fisheries sector.
As part of the project, successful applicants will have the opportunity to pursue undergraduate and postgraduate studies overseas in fisheries, marine science, mariculture, and agriculture.
The scholarship covers tuition fees, an annual book allowance for the duration of study, a one-time establishment allowance, a one-time departure allowance, and a stipend throughout the study period.
According to the Ministry, a total of 11 scholarship opportunities are available across fisheries and agriculture-related fields.
In the fisheries sector, the ministry is offering two bachelor’s degree scholarships in statistics or statistical data science and two Bachelor’s degree scholarships in marine science. In addition, one Bachelor’s degree scholarship is available in Marine Science under the Marine Research and Mariculture category, while one Bachelor’s degree scholarship is available in Microbiology.
