A total of 58,505 applications have been submitted under the three housing schemes introduced by the government to address the country’s housing shortage, according to statistics released by the Ministry of Housing, Land and Urban Development on Tuesday.

The figures show strong public interest in the Aailaa Boahiyaavahikan and Goathigedhoru programmes, which offer opportunities for applicants to obtain housing units and residential land.

Under the Aailaa Boahiyaavahikan programme, 45,644 applications were received. Of these, 35,818 were submitted for flats, while 9,826 applications were for land.

The Goathigedhoru scheme received 12,861 applications in total. Applications for land accounted for 12,749 of the submissions, while 112 applications were made for flats.

Housing has been identified by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu as the government’s highest national priority, with repeated commitments to expand access to housing and address longstanding shortages across the country.

Despite the government’s emphasis on housing, budget allocations for housing projects remained limited at the end of last year and during the first half of this year. The housing sector has therefore continued to attract attention as one of the key areas in which the administration is expected to deliver on its policy commitments.
