A new futsal pitch has been officially opened in Raa Atoll Maakurathu, completing a project initiated after local children requested the facility during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to the island last year.
As part of a nationwide tour of inhabited islands in January 2025, President Muizzu met residents to hear their concerns, aspirations and development priorities. During his visit to Maakurathu, a group of children privately requested the development of a futsal pitch for the island.
The President was accompanied by Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Fitness Abdulla Rafiu, who was instructed to begin arrangements for the project following the meeting with the children.
According to the government, the project reflects the administration’s commitment to listening to citizens and responding to community needs, regardless of age.
Following the President’s directive, work on the futsal pitch commenced within the year under the supervision of the Youth Ministry. The project was awarded to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) and was completed in early May.
The facility has now been officially inaugurated, with Minister Rafiu travelling to Maakurathu as the President’s special envoy to open the pitch.
The opening marks the completion of a project that originated from a direct request made by children during the President’s visits to islands across the country.
