President Appoints Mohamed Shakeel to ECM

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Mohamed Shakeel as a member of the Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM).

Mohamed Shakeel took the oath of office and signed the declaration of membership at a ceremony held today at the President’s Office. Justice Mohamed Saleem of the Supreme Court of the Maldives administered the oath. Following the ceremony, President Muizzu formally presented the letter of appointment.

The appointment was made in accordance with Article 167(a) and Article 168(b) of the Constitution of the Republic of Maldives, as well as Article 4(a) of Law No. 8/2008 (Elections Commission Act).

Shakeel’s appointment follows his approval by a majority vote of 51–7 during the parliamentary sitting held yesterday.

He fills a vacancy left by the resignation of former Commission President Mohamed Zahid, who stepped down from both his position as president and as a member of the Commission on 1 May. The reason for Zahid’s resignation was not disclosed.

The ECM comprises five members, including Vice President Abdul Rahman Salah Rasheed and members Hassan Zakariyya, Abdul Haseeb Ismail, and Al-Ustadh Rifaath Abdullah.
