Hassan Zareer Approved by Parliament as Minister of Finance and Public Enterprises
The letter of appointment was presented to Minister of Finance and Public Entreprises Hassan Zareer at an official ceremony held at the President’s Office on 8 June.
Hassan Zareer has been approved by the Parliament today for the post of Minister of Finance and Public Enterprises.
During today’s sitting, 49 Members of Parliament voted in favour of his appointment, with no votes against.
President Mohamed Muizzu appointed Zareer as Minister of Finance and Public Enterprises following the resignation of former minister Moosa Zameer. The appointment was made on 8 June, with the letter of appointment presented to Zareer during an official ceremony held at the President’s Office.
Zareer’s appointment came shortly after Zameer resigned from the post, citing health concerns at a PNC rally. Zameer also stated that despite his resignation, his support for the president and the PNC remains strong.
Prior to his appointment, Zareer served as Commissioner General of Taxation at the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA), a position he was appointed to last year.
According to his profile on the Chartered Accountants of the Maldives, he has also served as Chief Public Accounts Executive at the Public Accounts Office and headed the Public Enterprises Monitoring and Evaluation Board at the Ministry of Finance and Treasury.
He has further held board positions in several state-owned enterprises and listed companies, including Maldives Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC), State Electric Company (STELCO), Maldives Post Limited (MPL) and Maldives National Oil Company.
Zareer holds a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and a Master of Science in Finance from the International Islamic University Malaysia. He is also a Fellow Chartered Management Accountant (FCMA, CGMA) in the United Kingdom and a Certified Practising Accountant in Australia.
