Mohamed Shakeel has been proposed to the parliament for the position of President of the Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) by president Mohamed Muizzu, following his recent appointment as a member of the commission.
Shakeel was appointed as a member of the Commission last Wednesday. His appointment was made under relevant constitutional provisions and the Elections Commission Act, following parliamentary approval.
Following the president’s recommendation, Shakeel’s appointment as the commission’s president has been sent to the Committee on Independent Institutions for review.
If confirmed, Shakeel would assume leadership of the five-member commission responsible for overseeing electoral processes in the Maldives. The ECM currently includes Vice President Abdul Rahman Salah Rasheed and members Hassan Zakariyya, Abdul Haseeb Ismail, and Al-Ustadh Rifaath Abdullah.
Shakeel’s nomination follows the vacancy created by the resignation of former ECM President Mohamed Zahid on 1 May.
