The Maldives and India have discussed the ongoing negotiations on the proposed India–Maldives Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and the finalisation of a Bilateral Investment Treaty during Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed’s official visit to India.
The discussions took place during a meeting between Minister Saeed and India’s Commerce and Industry Minister, Piyush Goyal.
According to the Ministry of Economic Development, Transport and Trade, the meeting focused on advancing economic cooperation between the two countries. Discussions covered the ongoing FTA negotiations, the Bilateral Investment Treaty, and additional initiatives aimed at strengthening trade, investment and broader economic ties.
The ministry said both countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening economic relations, with a focus on trade, investment and sustainable economic development. It added that the proposed FTA is expected to improve market access for businesses in both countries, expand trade opportunities, address barriers faced by businesses and create a more favourable environment for investment.
Minister Saeed said the discussions reflected the shared commitment of President Mohamed Muizzu and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to deepen bilateral relations through stronger economic cooperation and mutually beneficial growth. Both sides also expressed confidence that increased investment and closer economic cooperation would further strengthen the long-standing partnership between the Maldives and India.
The meeting was attended by the Maldives’ High Commissioner to India, Aishath Azeema, along with officials from the Ministry of Economic Development, Transport and Trade and the Maldives High Commission in India.
