Northern and Central Maldives Record Above-Normal Temperatures, Says MET

The Maldives Meteorological Service has reported hotter-than-normal temperatures in the northern and central regions of the country.

According to the Met Office, temperatures reached 37 degrees Celsius in H.Dh. Hanimaadhoo, while Malé City recorded temperatures of 37 degrees Celsius from early afternoon until 14:00. Hanimaadhoo later recorded a peak temperature of 37.1 degrees Celsius.

Under weather standards, temperatures exceeding 37 degrees Celsius are classified as hotter than normal, while temperatures above 39 degrees Celsius are categorised as very hot.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has issued a heat advisory amid the ongoing hot weather, urging the public to take additional precautions. Infants, elderly people, pregnant women and individuals working outdoors for long periods have been advised to take extra care, particularly between 10:00 and 16:00 when temperatures are typically highest.

The HPA has recommended staying hydrated, wearing light and cool clothing, and avoiding unnecessary outdoor activities during the hottest hours of the day. The public has also been advised to seek medical assistance if they experience symptoms of heat-related illness.
