President Reaffirms Youth Empowerment as Top Government Priority

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed that youth empowerment remains a top priority for his Administration, saying ongoing efforts will address existing challenges and create better opportunities for young Maldivians.

The President made the remarks during the fifth episode of The Pulse, a podcast series produced by the President’s Office. The latest episode focused on youth empowerment, with senior journalist at Eki Online Hawwa Shifla participating as the invited journalist.

Describing young people as key stakeholders in nation-building, President Muizzu highlighted Government initiatives aimed at expanding economic and educational opportunities. He also provided an update on efforts to develop sports infrastructure across the country, saying the projects are expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2028.

The President stressed that the development of sports facilities was not limited to Malé and said projects were being implemented across the Maldives to support a healthier and more active population.

On mental health, President Muizzu said the Government was pursuing a holistic approach, recognising that mental well-being is closely connected to various social and economic circumstances affecting young people.

The President also highlighted measures to increase youth participation in the private sector and create sustainable income opportunities. He pointed to loan schemes aimed at supporting youth entrepreneurship and said the Government was working to address wider barriers to professional development.

Addressing the challenges faced by young professionals due to undocumented expatriate workers, President Muizzu said resolving the issue required a collective effort and noted that work on a long-term solution was nearing completion.

He also reiterated the Government’s target for the creative economy to contribute at least 15 per cent of the national Gross Domestic Product by 2030, outlining ongoing efforts to develop the sector.

Concluding the episode, President Muizzu said the Government’s broader vision was to empower citizens and ensure that Maldivians receive priority in employment and entrepreneurship. He said the Administration was focused on nurturing local talent across various sectors and ensuring graduates enter the workforce with advanced academic or vocational skills.

The President expressed confidence that the initiatives would deliver meaningful progress for the country’s youth.
