MDP, MNP and Adhaalath Party Fined MVR 50,000 Each Over Failing to Submit Financial Statements

The Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) has fined the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Maldives National Party (MNP) and Adhaalath Party MVR 50,000 each for failing to submit their financial statements within the required deadline.

ECM member and Spokesperson Hassan Zakariyya told state media that MNP and Adhaalath Party failed to submit their financial statements altogether, while the MDP submitted its statement approximately a week after the deadline.

Political parties must submit their financial statements within the first 90 days of each year. The deadline for submitting the 2025 financial statements expired on 20 May, after which the ECM decided to fine the non-compliant parties.

The ruling PPM-PNC coalition, Jumhooree Party and Maldives Development Alliance submitted their statements within the required period.

According to ECM statistics, the ruling PNC reported MVR 14.1 million in revenue in 2025. Of this, MVR 13.3 million came from ECM allocations, while MVR 842,000 came from private donations.

The MDP reported MVR 9.5 million in revenue, including MVR 8.4 million in ECM allocations and approximately MVR 1 million in donations. Corporate donations accounted for MVR 57,095 of the party’s income.

The MDP and PNC recorded the highest expenditures among political parties, according to ECM figures.
