The Maldives Bureau of Statistics has launched a new interactive data portal allowing users to create graphs and visualise official statistics, as part of efforts to improve public access to data.
The Data Explorer was launched yesterday to mark five years since the enactment of the Maldives Statistics Act, ratified in 2021.
Speaking to MV+, Chief Statistician Aishath Hassan said the bureau aims to make official data publicly accessible through its website, but noted that low data literacy remains a challenge for many users.
She said members of the public often rely on infographics and explanatory guides to understand statistical information, prompting the development of the new interactive portal.

The portal allows users to explore and download data while creating graphs and visualisations beyond the standard Excel format.
The platform currently features interactive dashboards on population, gross domestic product (GDP) and the Consumer Price Index (CPI). The bureau said data from additional sectors will be added as the development of the platform continues.
The launch coincided with the fifth anniversary of the Statistics Act, which established the framework for producing and disseminating official statistics in the Maldives.
The Maldives Bureau of Statistics said the past five years have included the completion of censuses and surveys, publication of datasets and the provision of statistical information to support policymaking and development.
The bureau said it remains committed to producing timely, impartial and credible data to support evidence-based decision-making.
