Maldives Begins 61st Independence Day Celebrations with Early Morning Flag-Hoisting Ceremony

Maldives celebrates its 61st Independence Day today, with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed attending a special flag-hoisting ceremony at Republic Square this morning.

Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef and senior government officials accompanied the First Couple at the ceremony, which began with a special prayer before the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Military Band performed the national anthem.

The Maldives celebrates Independence Day annually on 26 July, marking the end of the country’s British Protectorate status in 1965.

President Muizzu and the First Lady will also attend drill and display events at Republic Square tonight. The MNDF announced that a military parade will proceed alongside the field activities, commencing at Republic Square at 8:30 PM. Six contingents and the MNDF band will march through Malé, showcasing various corps and military units.

The parade formation will make four stops across the capital to perform musical selections: near Artificial Beach at the Majeedhee Magu and Boduthakurufaanu Magu junction, opposite the Children’s Park on Ameenee Magu, outside Galolhu Police Station on Ameenee Magu, and at the north-west corner of Kalhuthukkalaa Koshi.

Tonight’s event will also feature a parade by the Maldives National Cadet Corps, school performances, cultural displays, and routines by prominent local dance and boduberu groups.
