Rainy Weather to Continue Before Conditions Improve on Saturday

The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has forecast scattered showers, including heavy showers and thunderstorms, across the country tomorrow as wet weather continues, with conditions expected to improve on Saturday before slight showers return on Sunday.

MET said similar weather conditions are expected today until 6 PM, with scattered showers and occasional heavy showers and thunderstorms across the country. Winds are expected to blow at 3–13mph from the southeast or south in the southern atolls, while central and northern atolls will experience winds from the southwest/west and west/northwest respectively, at 10–18mph. Winds may gust up to 35mph during showers.

Seas are expected to remain slight in the southern atolls and moderate elsewhere, becoming rough during showers. Wave heights are forecast at 1–3 feet in the south and 3–5 feet elsewhere.

Over the next 24 hours, MET expects thundershowers in Hulhulé, Hanimaadhoo, Kaadedhdhoo and Gan.

Rainfall was recorded across several parts of the country between 8 AM on 12 August and 8 AM on 13 August. Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll’s Faresmaathodaa recorded the highest rainfall at 61mm, followed by Laamu Atoll’s Kahdhoo with 53.3mm. Gaafu Alifu Atoll’s Gemanafushi recorded 26.5mm, Kooddoo 23.5mm and Faafu Atoll’s Bilehdhoo 22.3mm.

In the Greater Malé area, 16.1mm of rainfall was recorded in Malé, 13.6mm in Hulhulé and 12.5mm in Hulhumalé.
