Five Judges Sworn in to Civil and Criminal Courts

Five newly appointed judges have been sworn in to the Civil Court and Criminal Court, following appointments by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

The judges took their oaths at a special ceremony held at the Supreme Court. High Court Judge Justice Fathimath Farheeza administered the oath in the presence of Supreme Court Chief Justice Abdul Ghanee Mohamed.

The JSC appointed two judges to the Civil Court and three to the Criminal Court. JSC President and Maafannu Mandhu MP Hussain Mubarik presented the judges with their robes.

The two judges appointed to the Civil Court are Mohamed Nishath of Gaafu Alifu Atoll, Kanduhulhudhoo, and Aasiya Azeema of Raa Atoll, Hulhudhoo Faru. Rose Villa.

Nishath holds a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and a Master of Laws from the Maldives National University. He has more than 15 years of experience in the legal field and has previously served as Chief Magistrate of the  Gaafu Alifu Atoll, North Kandu Hulhudhoo Magistrate’s Court. He has also held positions including Deputy State Attorney at the Attorney General’s Office, investigation and legal roles at the Anti-Corruption Commission, and General Counsel and Secretary General of the Maldives Bar Council.

Aasiya holds a Bachelor of Sharia and Law (Honours) from the Maldives National University and a Master of Laws from the University of Birmingham. She previously served as a Legal Officer at the People’s Majlis and Deputy Director of Legal Affairs between August 2014 and February 2021.

The three judges appointed to the Criminal Court are Sulaiman Mohamed of Lhaviyani Atoll, Kurendhoo, Ahmed Thaufeeq of Haa Alifu Atol, Dhidhdhoo and Mohamed Abdulla of Thaa Atoll, Veymandhoo.

Sulaiman holds a Bachelor of Sharia and Law with Honours from the College of Islamic Studies and has more than 12 years of experience in the legal field. He has served as Chief Magistrate of Lhaviyani Atoll, Hin’navaru Magistrate’s Court and Kurendhoo Magistrate’s Court, in the same atoll.

Ahmed Thaufeeq holds a Bachelor of Laws from Maldives College of Higher Education and a Master of Comparative Law from the International Islamic University Malaysia. He has more than 18 years of legal experience, including roles at the Attorney General’s Office and Prosecutor General’s Office.

Mohamed Abdulla holds a Bachelor of Arts and an LLB with Honours from Karnataka State Law University in India. He has more than eight years of legal experience and has served as a Senior Public Prosecutor at the Prosecutor General’s Office since September 2017.

The JSC said the two Civil Court appointments were made to increase the number of judges at the court, while two of the three Criminal Court appointments were also intended to expand its bench.
