Fisheries Ministry Consults Recreational Fishers on Sports Fishing Management Plan
The Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources has held consultations with individuals involved in recreational fishing as it works to formulate a management plan for sports fishing events in the Maldives.
The ministry said the meeting, held yesterday, was aimed at gathering information needed to develop a framework for organising, conducting and overseeing recreational fishing activities in the country.

The ministry also sought the views and input of stakeholders involved in the sector as part of the consultation process.

The move follows the government’s plans to further develop sports fishing as part of efforts to diversify the fisheries sector. Last year, Fisheries and Ocean Resources Minister Ahmed Shiyam said the government planned to develop dedicated sports fishing harbours in five regions of the Maldives.
The proposed facilities are expected to include fish stalls, administrative offices for organising competitions, restaurants and cafés, fishing gear shops and barbecue areas.
The government had previously said the initiative was intended to capitalise on the growing popularity of sports fishing among Maldivian youth while creating opportunities to attract more tourists and generate wider economic benefits.
The ministry had also said the administrative process to open the proposed harbour projects to investors was underway and that proposals had already been received from interested parties.
