Maldivian Contestant Places Fourth at World’s Largest Quran Competition in Makkah

Maldivian contestant Al-Hafiza Fatimath Shaya Zahir has secured fourth place in the full Quran memorisation category at the King Abdulaziz International Competition in Makkah. 

According to the Ministry of Islamic Affairs and Waqf Shaya, from M. Asaas, represented the Maldives among 334 elite finalists from 133 countries. The competition focuses on Quran memorisation, recitation and interpretation, with this year marking its 46th edition and the first time female contestants were allowed to participate.

Islamic Affairs and Waqf Minister Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed said Shaya’s achievement had brought honour to the Maldives. The results were announced at a special ceremony held at Masjid al-Haram, attended by senior Saudi officials, including Makkah Deputy Governor Prince Saud bin Mishal bin Abdulaziz.

Following the ceremony, Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dawah and Guidance, Dr Abdullatif Al-Asheikh, personally congratulated Shaya and her parents and offered encouragement.
