State Trading Organisation (STO) has introduced GE Healthcare’s newly launched Vscan portable ultrasound system to the Maldives, with the technology expected to expand access to scanning services beyond traditional clinical settings.

The device was launched at a ceremony held at Hotel Jen on Wednesday evening by STO CEO and Managing Director Shimad Ibrahim and GE Healthcare South Asia Sales Head Jagdishbabu.

STO said the portable ultrasound system can bring scanning services closer to patients by allowing healthcare professionals to conduct examinations outside conventional consultation rooms.

The company said the technology could particularly benefit smaller islands by making it easier to provide ultrasound services across the Maldives’ dispersed geography.

The Vscan systems can connect to Apple and Android smartphones as well as laptops, allowing medical images to be shared using the Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) standard.

GE Healthcare is widely used among radiologists and healthcare facilities in the Maldives, with STO serving as the brand’s authorised distributor.

STO said it has strengthened its after-sales support by training specialised biomedical engineers for different GE Healthcare systems. Its certified engineers cover modalities including MRI, CT, mammography and ultrasound, with the team including Maldivian female engineers.

STO said the launch forms part of its efforts to introduce specialised and innovative healthcare technology to the Maldives and support the development of the country’s healthcare sector.
