The Maldives Zakat House (MZH) has reduced the Nisaab threshold for Zakat on wealth, or Zakat al-Mal, to MVR 19,266.10, effective from today onwards.

The new threshold marks a reduction from the MVR 21,836.50 Nisaab set in April, which was the highest threshold recorded in the Maldives to date.

Under the Maldives Zakat Act, the Nisaab for Zakat on wealth is determined based on the price of silver. MZH said the latest calculation was based on current market prices, with gold valued at MVR 2,179.62 per gram and silver at MVR 38.32 per gram.

Zakat al-Mal becomes payable when an individual holds money or property equal to or exceeding the Nisaab threshold for one full Hijri year. The Zakat is calculated at 2.5 per cent of the qualifying wealth.
