Ranger Vessel Arrives to Strengthen Monitoring at Sh. Farukolhu Protected Area
The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy has announced the arrival of the Farukolhu Ranger vessel, which will support active monitoring and protection efforts at the Sh. Farukolhu Protected Area.
According to the ministry, the dedicated ranger team will soon begin patrols using the vessel to monitor the protected area and safeguard its ecosystems. The initiative is being carried out under the CATENATE project, which focuses on strengthening the management of protected areas in the Maldives.

Sh. Farukolhu, located in Shaviyani Atoll, was designated as a protected area in 2018 and covers 682.67 hectares. The site contains mangroves, wetlands, beaches, reefs and lagoons and supports a range of marine and other wildlife.

The CATENATE project focuses on improving the effective and equitable management of 15 protected areas in Boduthiladhunmathi Atoll, with Sh. Farukolhu serving as its focal site. The project is funded by the Global Environment Facility, while IUCN serves as the implementing agency and provides support for its implementation.
The arrival of the ranger vessel marks a further step towards moving Farukolhu from protected status on paper towards active, on-the-ground management, with patrols expected to strengthen monitoring and conservation efforts at the site.
